Insurance Isn’t a Commodity

Insurance, particularly commercial insurance, is not a generic commodity that can easily be comparison shopped (although many insurance commercials will attempt to convince you otherwise).

A pound of salt is generally a pound of salt regardless of brand. When it comes to insurance it’s quite the opposite; some of our carrier partners sell basic, bare-bones policies while others offer a nearly comprehensive product that by default includes cyber liability, employment practices liability, a dozen crime coverages that’d typically require a separate policy, etc. Understanding which of these optional coverages are actually valuable or even critical to your business is just one way we can assist. Navigating the labyrinth of 120+ page policy contracts to see how all those coverages actually apply to real-world scenarios is another crucial function our agency provides.

This idea applies to all types of property and casualty insurance. Does your auto policy provide diminution of value if you have an accident in a rented vehicle? Have you investigated risk management techniques to ensure your business insurance program is as attractive to carriers as possible? Is your homeowner’s policy “open perils” (also called “all-risk”)? If not, you’re on your own if an animal smashes through your sliding glass door (which is an actual claim we’ve seen).

Insurance is intended to provide peace of mind, but do your policies actually provide it? Do you have even a basic understanding of their functions? Believe it or not, a new client told me their prior agent hadn’t explained that raising a deductible lowers one’s premium in exchange for retaining more risk. Nor had they explained that making a claim results in a surcharge to the premium.

Of course, not all clients want to know exactly how the sausage is made, but an understanding of these concepts is required to evaluate the value of one’s insurance program. Whether you’re looking for the big picture or to get deep into the weeds, The Maheux Agency can help you navigate the nuances. That keeps you focused on what you do best—running your business successfully.

What We Cover

Commercial & small business insurance

Our specialty

General liability, commercial auto, workers’ comp, and umbrella products to cover every exposure your small business may have.

We bring middle-market expertise to the small commercial space. Businesses of all sizes face the same challenges, so why can’t small businesses get the same quality of advisor as middle-market businesses? They face the same issues, and we believe they deserve the same dedication in protecting their livelihoods.

Let’s review your business’ experience modification, risk management program, and the actual value of your policy relative to, as opposed to solely based on, the price.

Specialty lines

Cyber/data breach liability, employment practices liability, directors & officers (D&O), errors & omissions (E&O), medical malpractice, and more.

In the ever-changing world of insurance there’s always a newly trendy product. Lately it’s been cyber/data breach liability, now that almost all businesses are benefitting from an online presence that unfortunately leaves them vulnerable to new types of threats. This applies even if your business is completely or almost completely offline, due to digital payment processing (which includes processing for traditional credit & debit cards).

However, almost all small businesses can benefit tremendously from at least one of these products. Let us assist you in evaluating their value to your insurance program today.

Personal auto

Auto insurance is a near-universal need, and we promise to put the same effort into a single-vehicle policy that we would with our largest clients.

Everyone needs their assets well protected in this ever-increasingly risky and expensive aspect of life.

Homeowner’s, condo unit-owner’s & renter’s

The average American’s overall wealth and financial health are tied directly to their investment in their home.

Don’t spend 15 minutes online only to end up removing critical coverages that protect yours in order to hit an arbitrary price point. Rather, let us spend the hours scouring the market for the best available rates so you don’t need to sacrifice quality of coverage for a reasonable price.

It’s critical to recognize that the standard HO3 homeowner’s policy form lacks several crucial coverages by default. This goes back to the insurance-as-a-commodity concept. A homeowner’s policy from carrier A is not identical or even necessarily comparable to a policy from carrier B.

Not automatically included on a standard HO3 policy

  • Water & sewer backup
  • Ordinance & law
  • Service line
  • Guaranteed replacement cost and/or additional Coverage A
  • Personal injury
  • Flood
  • Earthquake
  • and more

However, when we ask folks, “Do you think this is always covered on a homeowner’s policy?” the answer is overwhelmingly “Yes!” That disconnect between expectation and reality is terrifying. We can help navigate this labyrinth so your nest egg is properly protected.

Excess/surplus lines & non-admitted products

Have you done business with an insurance agency only to find they were suddenly unwilling to help as soon as things became truly difficult? It’s a story we’ve heard more often than you’d think.

A business has a major claim (or two!), adds a challenging or high-risk new operation, or, through no fault of their own, faces a change in carrier appetites. Any of these scenarios can lead to the response, “I’m sorry, but our agency is no longer able to assist you.” Or, perhaps worse, “This very unattractive option is all we’ve got.”

The “why” is clear: excess/surplus lines insurance is difficult. These policies involve roughly triple the work for a third of the compensation, plus an increased E&O exposure for the agency. These scenarios are where an experienced agent unafraid of the excess/surplus market can make a meaningful difference in results for your business.

The traditional rules the state imposes on admitted insurance products no longer apply. Policy contracts can be written however the carrier prefers, and you won’t be dealing with the familiar standard-market insurers. The Maheux Agency works with the best national and regional wholesale brokers and has a long history of success with these non-traditional excess/surplus products.

When you need us most, we’ll be there.
